From Equality North Carolina: Urgent Action Needed to Stop ALL School Bullying

The following press release is from Equality North Carolina. A bill to combat school bullying has been proposed that would enumerate all of the groups that would be protected from bullying. The conservative right is opposed to including language that would protect those who are perceived as or are gay, lesbian, or transsexual and other groups. Please visit the ENC Action Page to read about this controversy and to take action.

The far right is so mired in their own bigotry that they're willing to stand up and oppose a bill that protects our public school students from bullying and harassment simply because it makes clear that it covers anti-LGBT bullying.

They're so wedded to their ideology that they're willing to stand by and ignore the fact that gay kids are being bullied, harassed and even assaulted on a daily basis in our schools, and all too often teachers look the other way.

On Tuesday the House Education Committee held a hearing on House Bill 1366, the School Violence Prevention Act, and Rep. Mark Hilton, backed by the right-wing NC Family Policy Council, proposed an amendment that would weaken the bill and remove sexual orientation, gender identity, and other categories from the bill.

We need your help right now to stop him when his destructive proposal is voted on Thursday morning. Our legislative allies have asked us to have you contact the committee members and ask them to oppose this amendment. Click the Take Action button to send a message right now.

Thank you!

Ian
